HK GOVERNMENT COMMITS TO I.T.
In a recent speech by Acting Secretary for Trade and Industry, Tam Wing-Pong made clear confirmation of the Hong Kongs government's commitment to IT for the turn century. Pointing out that recent developments in the IT industry have had a direct impact on every facet of life, he placed emphasis on Hong Kong's need to stay a pioneer in coming information age.
Tam said "The Government has long recognised the importance of the development of IT and the relevant infrastructure to the maintenance of Hong Kong as a leading world service and financial centre". He also claimed, "In addition, we actively promote the implementation of electronic data interchange (EDI) through the development of the Community Electronic Trading Services (CETS)". This promotion proves the Government's commitment to provide financial support to encourage both research and development in IT. Since 1994, the Hong Kong Government has provided over HK$160 million to support 30 projects in IT and telecommunications.
Tam also stressed the stability of the Government's commitment to IT development by pointing out that, "The Chief Executive has stated in his Policy Address that the IT-related responsibilities which are now divided among several Government Bureaux will be re-grouped so that the portfolio may be entrusted to one Bureau Secretary. This significant step should ensure a more focused and orchestrated approach by the Government in promoting the future development of IT in Hong Kong".
This positive approach to IT will ensure not only further IT growth in Hong Kong, but also growth in the IT career market. With more companies seeking to be competitive in the technological marketplace, the future looks very bright for young and up-coming IT professionals. If Tam's optimism is anything to go by, Hong Kong will be offering successful IT career opportunities for both graduates and seasoned professionals for years to come.
